How to Prepare for a Child Portrait Session in Austin & the Texas Hill Country
Preparing for your child’s portrait session doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a little planning and the right mindset, your child’s photography session can be relaxed, playful, and genuinely fun. As a children’s portrait photographer, I’ve found that the best child portraits happen when kids feel comfortable enough to be themselves.
Here’s exactly how to prepare for your child’s portrait session so the day runs smoothly and the images feel natural, genuine and timeless.
Start the Day Slow
Avoid over-scheduling the morning of your child’s portrait session. A calm start helps kids arrive happy, curious, and ready to engage. Rushing leads to tension—and tension never photographs well.
Feed Them First (Trust Me)
A full tummy makes all the difference. Plan a balanced meal or snack before your session. Skip the sugar overload and opt for something that keeps energy steady. Happy kids create joyful children’s portraits.
Choose Comfortable Outfits
Comfort is key for children’s photography. If your child can move, sit, and play easily, their confidence shows. When kids feel good in what they’re wearing, it translates into relaxed expressions and natural body language.
Release the “Perfect Smile”
There’s no need to practice smiles or remind your child to pose. Some of the most meaningful child portraits come from in-between moments—soft smiles, laughter, thoughtful looks, and playful movement. Those are the moments worth preserving.
Let Kids Be Kids
Wiggly? Curious? Shy? All welcome here. Children don’t need to be still or serious for great portraits. I follow their lead, engage at their level, and let moments unfold organically.
Bring a Comfort Item
For younger children, a favorite toy or blanket can be a game-changer. It helps them feel secure and confident, making transitions easier throughout the session.
Stay Relaxed
Parents set the emotional tone. When you’re calm and encouraging, your child feels safe to explore and interact. I’ll handle the flow of the session... you get to enjoy watching your child just be themselves.
Remember Why You’re Here
This season of childhood is fleeting. Missing teeth, big laughs, quiet moments—they don’t last forever. Child portrait photography is about preserving who your child is right now, not creating perfection.
If you’re looking for children’s portraits that feel playful, natural, and beautifully timeless, I’d love to photograph your child. My portrait sessions are designed to feel easy and fun while creating artwork you’ll treasure for years, and worthy of space on your walls, and your heart!
Let's get the giggles going!
