A free-spirited tween, open skies, and a session that feels like a story unfolding.

Winding Roads, Open Skies and Tween Portraits on the Outskirts of Austin
There’s something about the Texas Hill Country west of Spicewood that feels untamed in the best possible way. The land rolls instead of shouts. The sky stretches wide and patient. Time slows just enough to let you notice the quiet magic hiding along winding roads, barbed wire fencing that goes for miles and endless open skies.
This is where we met for Kaia's tween portrait session just outside of Austin, out where the pavement gives way to dust and possibility.… out where the pavement gives way to dust and possibility.
She arrived with her cowgirl boots showing, hair loose, and eyes full of wonder. A playful, free-spirited tween who doesn’t just walk into a space but takes it all in.
Our session wasn’t about poses or perfection; it was about movement, breath, and curiosity. About letting the landscape lead and allowing wanderlust to take over.
From the start, the mood was cinematic. The clouds hung low, filtering the light into something soft yet dramatic. Nature itself had set the stage. The wind carried stories through the tall grass, tugging at her dress, encouraging motion. She didn’t resist it. She leaned into it.
Wanderlust isn’t about running away; it’s about discovering. Discovering curiosity. Discovering feeling. Discovering the quiet pull of something bigger than yourself. And that’s what she embodied so effortlessly. There was innocence, yes, but also strength. A sense that she belonged exactly where she was, even as she dreamed of everywhere else.
The Hill Country mirrored her spirit perfectly. Stark yet beautiful. Wild but grounding. Every click of the shutter felt intentional, not rushed. We let the silence speak. We let the moments breathe. Photography like this isn’t captured, it’s witnessed.
As the sun dipped lower, the light turned moodier, wrapping everything in deep grays and muted golds. The session became more intimate, more introspective. She stood at the edge of a hill, staring into the distance, as if imagining all the roads she hasn’t traveled yet. That’s where the magic lived, in the in-between moments, when she forgot about the camera entirely. And if you know me, you know I love those “in-between moments”. That’s where the magic happens.
This wasn’t just a photo session. It was a collaboration between soul and landscape. A reminder that the most powerful images come from authenticity, from allowing yourself to be seen without armor.
The Texas Hill Country west of Spicewood gave us drama, texture, and mood. She brought the wanderlust. Together, we created something timeless… images that feel like memories, even if they’ve only just been made.
And that’s the beauty of sessions like this. They don’t just tell a story. They feel like one.
